Why Do We Procrastinate?

There are many reasons why we procrastinate. Some of these reasons include fear, exhaustion, or feeling sorry for ourselves. Many of them can be wrapped up in emotions, and sometimes we don’t even understand how or why we are not doing things we know we should be doing or even things we ultimately want to do. Take a look at this graphic for some other reasons we procrastinate:

whydoweprocrastinate

The bottom line for procrastinating, however, is that we’re just not ready to tackle the task at hand. And in most cases – that’s okay. (However, in some cases you may need to seek professional help.) Sometimes things take time, and when we are ready, we will get to that task.

And have you noticed that when we do procrastinate, we will choose to do so many other things? The most obvious thing we will do is something else we would rather do. But sometimes, we will even choose to do something else we would rather NOT do, so long as it ranks higher on the list than the task at hand. Some things we do at this time may be considered mindless, like surfing the net or even watching a show without even paying attention to it. Take a look at this graphic for some more things we do when we procrastinate:

But sometimes we get insistent on needing to do something else first, such as cleaning or exercising – almost like a ritual. If you’re at this point, good for you – that means you’re close to getting the task done. If this works for you, it’s a good thing because you’re actually getting two things done that need to get done.

Sometimes we need to set the mood first, such as with background music. Sometimes it is beyond our control and the mood is set for us. Have you ever noticed that an emotion like anger can trigger you into getting a task done? This connection kind of makes sense. If it’s an emotion that started your procrastination, it can take an emotion to end your procrastination.

Other ideas that can help us stop procrastinating include changing scenery, gathering resources, making a plan, and just trying something new and different. Take a look at this graphic for more details on ideas that can help us stop procrastinating:

Who am I?

Who am I?

Who am I? A Poem by Darlene Wiggers

Who am I?

Do you really know me?

Do you dare to come near?

You may think I am aloof or arrogant.

But I may be easily misread.

The layers of my onion may fool you.

Will you dismiss me too quickly?

But I may be good for you,

As I am an acquired healthy taste.

Who am I?

Do you really know me?

Do you dare to come near?

I am the roaring sound of a seashell,

Holding memories of long ago.

Do you have the time to hear them?

Will I open up to you?

I may touch you with my stories.

Am I worth the time to you?

Who am I?

Do you really know me?

Do you dare to come near?

I am the fragrant scent of a rose,

Nursed by the summer sun and the rain.

My heart is true and authentic,

But I see that not all hearts are.

So, I have grown thorns to protect me.

Who are you? Will I trust you? Will I let you come in?

Who am I?

Do you really know me?

Do you dare to come near?

I am a hidden gem in my oyster shell,

Sometimes overlooked.

My value is appreciating,

Just like the weight of gold.

Will you take the time to culture me?

I just may climatize to you.

Who am I?

Do you really know me?

Do you dare to come near?

It takes much more time to know me.

You may not “see” me even at second sight.

When I am scared,

I am protected by my turtle shell.

But when I am strong,

I pop like a beautiful firecracker.

Will you miss me in the blink of an eye?

I have so much to offer.

Do you have the patience for me?

It’s your loss, if you walk away,

I know I am worth more than just a few tries.

The Healing of the Pause

TheHealingOfThePause

The Healing of the Pause

In the hustle and the bustle,

And all the noise of your life –

The answers to your questions

Never ever come to light.

Hear the whispers of the wind

In the struggle and the strife?ThehealingPause

Feel the ripple of the waves,

Or the rustle of your mind?

Stop reacting to the racket.

They don’t own you –

You’re in charge.

Choose to listen to the peace.

Choose to shut it all out.

Sense the freedom of release,

Sense the sway of the rhythm.

As there’s a message in a bottle.

There’s a song in that sound.

Still the madness

For a moment.

Heed the calmness

To be found.

The key is in the silence.thehealingofthe pause

Let go and lose yourself.

Be open to the remedy.

Be present just this once.

The cure is in your range.

Inhale the breadth of this instant

Receive the healing of the pause.
