Reiki – What to Expect

Before You Arrive

If you can, try to come at least an hour after mealtime. The consumption of caffeine/alcohol can also affect a Reiki treatment. So if you consume these, it is best to have enough time for the effects of these to wear off prior to a Reiki treatment. If possible, please wear clothing that is loose and comfortable.  This ensures that you are comfortable during the treatment.  It is also recommended that you remove any jewellery (rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches) and metal items (keys, coins) as metal may interfere with the Reiki energy treatment.  Also, if you bring your cell phone, please turn it off.  Even in vibrate mode, it can have a negative impact on the relaxation process.  A bathroom is also available for your convenience.

The Atmosphere of the Area

just breathe

Just Breathe by Carolyn Cochrane

I have a dedicated room in my smoke-free, pet-free home (especially helpful for those with allergies) for the use of treatments.  It is well suited for this purpose. I have designed it with serene ambience in mind.  I have carefully chosen inspirational words and images, aromatherapy, as well as other tranquil decor and features.  To further this quiet peacefulness, scheduling is done by appointment only, which means that you will be the only client here at that time – unlike the hustle and bustle of other locations (people coming and going, talking…).  Furthermore, there is no issue with parking, as you can park on the roundabout right in front of the front entry walkway.

Before the Treatment Begins

If this is your first appointment, I will start with an intake form and we will discuss your health concerns, challenges, and goals.  I will look not only at your medical history, but also the stress factors in your life.  I believe this is an important part of your overall health.  During your treatment, I address your whole person – body, mind, and spirit – not just the symptoms.  The goal of Reiki is to help restore and maintain the body’s natural balance, by clearing away any negative energies and to promote overall well-being.  Once we have determined areas of health concern, we are ready to begin.

If this is not your first appointment, we’ll review your previous appointment and any new health concerns.  Keeping these intentions in mind, we are then ready to begin the treatment.

During the Treatment

At the start of the treatment, I like to review the five precepts of Reiki and determine a reiki principlesfocus for our intentions. The focus is one that is general in nature and works to heal the body, mind, and spirit by clearing away any negative energies. Then you are asked to lay down, face-up, on the massage table, fully clothed. I have a blanket available, if you wish. During the treatment, I move around the table and hold my hands above your body for short intervals, as this is where the fields of energy are located.

Typically people do not talk during the treatment and often people fall asleep or reach a near state of sleeping. If, however, you feel a need to bring something to my attention, please do so as I would like you to be comfortable. For example if you are cold, I can add a Subtle Sensations - The Healing Hand Some common things that people have noticed during the treatment is feeling coolness, warmth, and or tingling. However, some people feel nothing at all. Be assured that what you may feel or not feel is not a measure of whether or not Reiki is working, as each person senses energy in a different way. Most people, however, report feeling relaxed and at peace.

Following this, the treatment is completed, but I allow you some time to relax before getting up.  At this time, we can briefly reflect on your treatment and book your next appointment.  Then I will supply you with your receipt which reflects that I am a Certified Reiki Practitioner registered with the Canadian Reiki Association (CRA-RP) and appointment card. Check with your benefits group to see if you have coverage for Reiki. Prior to your departure, I supply you with your own special care pack.

After a Reiki treatment, you will most likely feel at peace and very relaxed.  Some people say they feel sleepy, while others report feeling energized. It really depends on the makeup of your body and health.  Most clients say they sleep well following a treatment.  Some people may experience health responses.  Some examples are physical like a runny nose or an improvement in a sore shoulder or headache.  Others may experience an emotional response.  All of these responses are normal as Reiki works to access your entire being through your fields of energy.  Reiki aims bathto remove any negative energies, including pent up toxins and negative emotions, by neutralizing them.  Self-improvement requires time and a commitment on your part, as well as a willingness to move in a positive direction on your journey to wellness. It is always recommended that you drink plenty of water drink waterfollowing the appointment to flush out any impurities, and rehydrate.  Furthermore, drinking plenty of water helps to reduce the possibility of any feelings of malaise that may occur. I also recommend an epsom salt bath, as well, as this aids in the process of detoxification and the absorption of magnesium which further helps to improve your feeling of wellness.  For your convenience, I have a selection of bath salts available for purchase.
