THE IMPOSSIBLE – A POEM BY DARLENE WIGGERS

Anything is possible

You just have to believe

When everything lines up

It’s easy to achieve

Removing limitations

Adjusting expectations

Past, present, future

Is just an illusion of time

Forgiving and forgetting

Vulnerability with an open mind

Let loose and see where it takes you

Just give it a try

Positivity flows in the right direction

The plan includes unexpected purposes

Turning balanced changes into small miracles

The impossible CAN be in the future!

The Sequel

The Sequel – A Poem by Darlene Wiggers

Words unspoken

Thoughts that abound

Emotions are reeling

The healing that hurts

Once upon a time

Happily ever after

The sequel is ending

A new story begins

Pain and suffering

Humour that heals

The heart is aching

Searching for hope

Life is for living,

Laughing, loving, and forgiving

Not judging and regretting

But understanding and appreciating

Listen to Your Intuition

I am not a huge roller coaster fan, but I feel that life is like a roller coaster sometimes. The length of a second or a minute is the same in either, however, the perception of it varies depending on your personality or the particular situation. The highs are often fast paced while the lows are long lived. If you like it, you can’t get enough of it and long for more, but if it’s not your cup of tea, you can’t wait for it to be over and don’t want to go through it again. If you are orange, you thrive on the thrills and risks. But some people aren’t built for the ups and downs (yet), and end up “throwing up”.

Mindset is your power. To maneuver through the ups and downs you need to develop “Grit” (Angela Duckworth). When you fail, you may need some time to regroup – take the time if you need it, and if the situation allows for it. You may need to re-evaluate. What does this setback mean? Are you ready to continue on this path, or do you need to redirect? Don’t feel bad. There is value in each situation. Learn from it and grow. Build your resilience for the next challenge you face on the path of your life.

Be open-minded and open up all of your senses. You may need to work on this; practice mindfulness – it helps. Listen to your intuition – sometimes you feel it is or isn’t right, and sometimes you just know. Be open to the signs that are there all around you; sometimes we’re too busy to notice. If the signs are ignored, the price can be steep.

There will be hard times, but if you know this to be your truth, trust in it. Keep the faith, and don’t stop trying.

Focus. Persevere. Triumph.

I have always liked poetry, both the reading of it and the writing of it. Here is one written by my younger self, at age 18.

The Pond of Everlasting Hope – a poem by Darlene Novak

In the back of the yard

Exists a pond, a man-made pond.IMG_0473

And in the summer

The pond was alive;

Flowers in bloomIMG_0581

Birds in tune

And the fish – yes – the goldfish

– So many together

So bound, forever

And then autumn fell

And the flowers were gone.

The birds, they too, flew away.

IMG_0252

Honk! Honk!

The goldfish removed

To an indoor pond

To safety, to warmth

But a temporary home

All of them secure

To carry on the tradition.

All of them? – No, not all,

All, except two

Two which could not have been caught.

Two which would not be caught.

Although it was tried again and again

The two remained in the pond.

All said, they would dieIMG_0860

All said, they would not – make it.

But the two remained in the pond.

Some time has passed since that autumn day

And many cold days have come

Some rain has fallen

And snow has stormed

Hiding the pond from all’s view

IMG_1064

So many footprints!

All are fine, though rain still falls

The two are still in the pond

-Presumably dead, though no one will know

Until the breaking of ice.

The time has come

For the sun to shine.

The ice is beginning to melt

Slowly, though,

The process takes time

But through warmth, it will become clear.

The birds have returned; the flowers in bloom

Through faith, the two have survived

And one day soon, the others will join them.

God has brought them new life.

It comes down to one simple thing: How bad do you want it?

Inspired by J is for Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it – DALAI LAMA -LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME AND MAKE IT A MASTERPIECE

There are many ways to define success, but this entry is not about that. For the purpose of this entry, I am thinking of success as something towards which you are working.

Sometimes when you work hard towards something, you may begin to wonder if it is really worth it after all? You are putting in so much time and as the saying goes: “a lot of blood, sweat, and tears”. But remember, no one said it was going to be easy. At this time, you need to dig deep and do some soul searching. You need to ask yourself, “Is this something I really want?” It is important that this is your goal and not someone else’s. After all, it is your life. If it is definitely not what you want, then stop reading right now. But if it is what you want, or even if you’re not sure, please read on. You can decide on this later. Maybe you’ll have an “aha moment”, and realize that it is what you want, after all.

You should try to visualize what things would look like if you achieved this goal. If you have doubts and are not happy with what you see, then paint a different picture:  see it in a positive light; see it as though things worked out. See yourself being confident in this role; see yourself being happy in this role. Now, keep that picture at the forefront of your mind, and don’t let go of it!

“The reason why people give up so fast is because they tend to look at how far they still have to go, instead of how far they have come.” As you work towards a goal, it’s okay to pause and reflect, even if you are so busy. Take a moment, and remember all the little successes that have brought you to this point. Yes, it was hard, but focus on the positive. It might be good to write down your successes and or talk to someone about them. Your successes are very real, and you are the one who did it! You made it happen! Don’t discount this – there is great value in what you have done so far! Give yourself a pat on the back! Take a moment to relish these little successes that have brought you to this point.

“Success is no accident. It’s hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love for what you are doing or learning to do.” “Success demands for sacrifices: Sacrifice of sleep, sacrifice of entertainment, sacrifice of comfort zone.” And

really “it comes down to one simple thing: how bad do you want it?” I know, you’re tired, and you don’t know if you can do this anymore, but you are loved and you have lots of support. Believe in yourself. You can do this! And sacrifice always comes before success, so you’re going to have to work for it. As it is said in microeconomics, there is an “opportunity cost”. You are going to have to give up something in order to get what you want.

You may not even like what you have to do now, but remember the shape of things to come will be different. And what you have to do may make you feel uncomfortable – but you are going to have to get out of your comfort zone to see this through. And you will grow, as a result: “Be willing to sacrifice comfort for growth.” This is the time to remind yourself of: “See the end result in a positive light; see it as though things worked out. See yourself being confident in this role; see yourself being happy in this role. Now, keep that picture at the forefront of your mind, and don’t let go of it.” In other words, “keep your eyes on the prize!”

In the meantime, “Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.” And remember, “in order to achieve your goals you must make sacrifices, commit daily, overcome challenges and work your plan. No one can do it for you. It is up to you.” But no matter what, “Never sacrifice these three things: your family, your heart, or your dignity.”

And when you achieve your goal, and you pause, reflect, and judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it, I hope you celebrate and say that it was worth it! The harder you work at something, the more you appreciate the result. This is similar to Newton’s Third Law: “Every action has an equal but opposite reaction.” And if you didn’t work that hard, it’s still a win! But what I mean is that you appreciate it more if you worked harder – it’s the equality of the exchange.

Right – A poem by Darlene Wiggers

Think, feel

Feel, think

Right, left

Left, right

Right is not wrong

But left is not right

Two become one

That is what’s right

Sense makes dollars

Emotions might

Two become one

That is what’s right

Save, spend

Keep, give

What makes sense?

What feels right?

Work to live

Live to work

Live it up

Live for life

One life to live

Or is there more?

Make it right

Make it right

What do you think?

What do you feel?

What will you do?

What will be right?

Life is hard

Life is light

Light is love

Love is light

Head, heart

Truth, dare

What will you do?

What will be right?

Sad, happy

Disease, health

Follow your heart

Your heart is what’s right

That is what’s right!

Right is what’s right!

Inspired by I is for If Opportunity Doesn’t Knock, Build a Door – DALAI LAMA -LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME AND MAKE IT A MASTERPIECE

When I first read this quote, I was pleasantly surprised about the part “build a door”. Perhaps you were, as well? Other responses might be, “oh yeah, that’s what I would do” or “no way, who would do that?” Our experiences and our genetic makeup play a role in shaping how we are, and will unquestionably have an effect on how we would react to any given situation. If you’ve had a string of bad luck, you could react pessimistically. Your faith is being tested, and your doubts could be on the rise. If you typically think “outside of the box”, you may approach “building this door” with creativity.  On the other hand, you may be afraid of “building this door” because you lack confidence and or skill.  You may also be in need of motivation, if you aren’t willing to put in the work it takes. But if you are naturally a proactive person, chances are you will be prepared to “build the door”.

As stated previously, our experiences and our genetic makeup shape how we are, and past experiences can be an indicator of future performance (that’s why many establishments rely on behavioural interviews). However, a paradigm shift can change all this. It begins with becoming more aware of yourself, and being open-minded to seeing things from a different perspective. These things don’t, of course, change overnight but little changes in attitude can go a long way.

The point of this is that sometimes we all feel stuck or trapped. Some of us do something about it, and some of us don’t. Responsibilities may play a role in this, when timing isn’t right. But you can still do something about it. Use this time to prepare – take a course, research, network, put aside some money…All of these will help you to get unstuck and move you forward in the direction of a new opportunity. The key is to live each day in hope – always have something to look forward to or to work towards.

Every day we are faced with decisions, big and small, which ultimately affect the direction of our lives. Where are you going? Where do you want to go? Sometimes we forget we are in the driver’s seat. A variety of choices are always available. Don’t be a backseat driver; take the wheel in your hands. Adjust your approach to change your outlook, and make it happen!

Are you ready for opportunity?

Inspired by H is for Hold onto Your Dreams – DALAI LAMA -LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME AND MAKE IT A MASTERPIECE

Excuse the apparent dichotomy, but this reflection is not going to begin as you might expect. Although it is inspired by Hold onto your Dreams, I’m beginning with the idea of Letting Go; not of letting go of your dreams, but rather letting go of other things that hold you back – things such as not liking change, fear, guilt, and the past.

  1. We need to let go of not liking change.

People get used to their routines. Routines can be very helpful, but sometimes it’s good to mix it up – “Variety is the spice of life”. Trying something new is different from what we are used to. We feel safe with what is “tried and true”, so it’s natural that there is some resistance. But with change, comes growth – and growth means vitality. Think of someone you know who is following their dream(s). Wouldn’t you say they are full of life? That’s because they are being true to themselves. They are full of passion because they have figured out their purpose. Following your dreams bring out your passion, and having a passion is invigorating. Dreams can be the seeds of your future, if you let them. So be open to embracing change so you can move forward.

  2. We need to let go of fear, but not all of it.

If something gives you fear and excitement, it might be worth a try. Balance is key in letting go and holding on – let yourself be more inspired and less terrified. Of course, we feel safer with both feet on the ground, but you’re never going to fly with both feet on the ground. On the flip side, you can’t live on Cloud 9. There’s a fine line between being practical, realistic, sensible and being idealistic, ambitious, and visionary. A little fear is good because it helps to keep you grounded. And yes, I know there is risk involved with having one foot off the ground. But if you don’t take a calculated risk, you lose the chance. I have come across two acronyms for FEAR – Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise, very reminiscent of the flight or fight response to stress. So how do you Face Everything and Rise, especially when doubts are plaguing you? You need to have some courage, hope, and faith. “Feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death.” Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you. Once you believe and have a vision of your dream, the next step is to create a good plan, and follow through. “Dream big, work hard, make it happen.” That’s how you make your dream a reality.

  3. We need to let go of guilt, sometimes.

We all have responsibilities, and we are accountable to so many people for so many things. Yes, the bills need to get paid, and we need to get our children to that soccer game…, but we forget that we also need to be accountable to ourselves. Often, we get so wrapped up in what other people will think if we do or don’t do something that is expected. If we always succumb to other people’s expectations, we are held back from realizing our own. This is where prioritizing, compromising, and time management come into play. Time is so precious, and we can’t always be everything to everyone everywhere. Sometimes it’s okay to say “no” to someone else so that you can say “yes” to yourself. This gives you the time you need to just be yourself, or it puts you on the path to discovering yourself. You shouldn’t feel guilty about that. You are very important too. So, follow your dreams, you deserve it.

  4. We need to let go of the past.

We need to accept the past, not live in it; no matter what you do, the past cannot be changed. We often feel bad about something that we did, and it gets lumped into our bag of failures. This eats away at our confidence, and we are back to number 2 from above – fear. It’s a vicious cycle from which it can be hard to break free. We often feel sorry for ourselves and get stuck in a deep well.  In short, we beat ourselves up over it, again and again. The key is to turn that lemon into lemonade. Accept that a mistake/failure happened, but don’t sabotage yourself by dwelling in it. If you allow yourself to live in the past, you will have regrets in the future about not pursuing your dream. Instead, take a few steps back from the situation, and ask yourself, “What can I learn from this? How can I improve? What would I do differently next time? What is my takeaway?” There is always a lesson to be learned, so decide to focus on that. Let go of the past, and allow yourself to set a new goal or dream a new dream, before you run out of time. We only have one life to live – what are you waiting for?

Letting go can be hard, and it may take some time before you’re able to do it. “When you let go, you create space for better things to enter your life” – just like when you buy new things, you should eliminate one of your belongings. It’s part of housecleaning and decluttering. I believe that letting go to pursue your dreams may be related to minimalism. Things that hold you back also hold you down. There is freedom in letting go.

So, what would you rather do – “sleep with your dreams or wake up and chase them”? Do you really want to be sleep walking through your life? Let go of things that hold you back. Yes, there will be unknowns. Step out of your comfort zone. It will be both exciting and scary. After all, it is an adventure. You will learn, you will grow, and you will find yourself! Just have some courage and believe. “Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today.”

Carpe diem!

Inspired by G is for Give More than You Planned To – DALAI LAMA -LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME AND MAKE IT A MASTERPIECE

The Greatest Investment of All!

We often associate giving with the giving of things or money, but there is so much more to it than this. You can give your love, your time, and you can give of yourself. Consider how valuable these things are.

Think of the times when you have given gifts such as a toy, a sweater, or jewelry. Now compare these to gifts of love and time – how you make someone feel and experiences you share with them. It could be as simple as a compliment or a note of encouragement to brighten someone’s day, or time away with your undivided attention – time without the distractions of cell phones, internet, and television. Giving love and time like this builds character and memories.

And think about how much you give of yourself every single day. What you give is what you get back at least ten-fold. Of course, there are times when you lack motivation and “you’re just not into it”. But it’s important to monitor these times, and not let them become the bulk of your lifetime. “If you are too lazy to plow, don’t expect a harvest.” It’s entirely up to us.  Our life depends on the choices we make each and every day, and these choices not only have an effect on you, but many other people too. You can “give up, give in, or give it all you’ve got.”

And sure, sometimes you get into a rut, and maybe you dream about the life you want. But “you don’t get what you wish for, you get what your work for.” If you don’t like what is in front of you – change it! “You’ve got what it takes, but it will take everything you’ve got.”

This involves planning and developing a vision. You will have to be determined and persevere – but be prepared because sometimes it won’t be easy. The currency may be your blood, sweat and tears. Are you prepared to give that? And, sometimes it won’t work out. Self-talk helps here: “You didn’t come this far to only come this far.”

Although it’s disappointing, remind yourself there’s always Plan B or C.

Sometimes you will have to go through a storm to appreciate the beauty of a rainbow. And although it’s not easy to find this treasure, it is definitely worth it. Share your talent and let yourself shine. “The meaning of life is to find your gift, the purpose of life is to give it away.” This is what will give you joy and inner peace.

So the next time, you’re debating on what to give someone or you’re feeling unmotivated, and don’t feel like giving it all you’ve got – remember “from little seeds grow mighty trees.” To reap these benefits, you’re going to have to invest in the gift of your time. “Your greatness is not what you have, it’s what you give”
